In ancient times, archaeologists and historians seem to agree, European societies were matriarchal and divinity was associated with femininity. In some cultures, female fertility was worshiped and sometimes even the vagina.
And now? To talk about vaginas is taboo, women are (still) suffering from inequality and to make things worse: girls and women are being exploited and abused on an enormous scale!
There is something wrong with the way we treat those once revered human beings!
To give you an idea of the scale of this mistreatment, let me share with you some statistics (sources are provided below).
There are 26,250,000 arranged marriages worldwide, which comprises more than 50% of all marriages.
More than 11 million girls are forced to marry before the age of 18 and 11% of all girls in developing countries are forced to marry before the age of 15.
More than 5000 women die each year because of honor killings.
The fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world is the trafficking of women and children for sexual exploitation. Almost 21 million adults and children worldwide are sold into sexual servitude or forced labor and 2 million of these victims are children. Women and girls make up 95% of the victims.
In the US alone, between 300,000 (lowest estimate) and 1.3 million (highest estimate) women are raped EVERY YEAR. The chance that a woman gets raped is estimated at 1 in 5! Many more statistics about other countries can be found on the internet.
People might oppose feminism, or complain that men are victims of these crimes too, but it is hard to ignore the statistics which demonstrate that women are suffering on a much larger scale!
So don’t turn a blind eye to this shameful reality and do whatever can be done.
